Chapter 10
Maria was making the final preparations for their meal while everyone gathered to plan the raid on Vargas’ compound. She pulled a chair up next to Cass and Monty. There were ten men and women sitting around the table in serious discussion. Cass marked a map with circled initials representing each man or woman at various points.
“We go before dawn,” Cass said. The rain had ended and they expected a foggy predawn, which would hide their approach to the villa but make travel touchy.
Monty spoke. “Elena’s cousin just called. Vargas’ uncle has arrived at the plantation for a meeting with Vargas. He thinks he’s planning a move. And there’s something else.” He examined each face, settling on Cass’.
“Tell me.” Cass said, his jaw clenching.
“There’s a buyer coming in for the opal. But also, Raul says there is a garage full of guns and drugs. We can bring him down for good if we time it right. Miguel will call a polícia when we are ready.”
Elektra’s gut cramped. This might all come to an end, and Cass would be safe. I must get Cass aside and warn him.
Cass’ smile was menacing, kindling his eyes to a manic ice blue. “Miguel, we don’t want to risk losing him, so wait for our signal.”
The lanky young Brazilian seemed eager but nodded seriously. “Sim.”
Rosario spoke up. “All vehicles have been equipped. Ten men will go on foot, the rest will stay with the jeeps until five o’clock, or on word from you or Monty.”
Monty said, “I have Ten-oh-five, every one sync-up and get some rest.”
Elektra watched the young locals as Monty reminded them of every important detail. They were capable and serious but not police or militia. Their lives would depend on their preparation.
“Let’s walk outside and double check everything, Rosario,” said Cass.
Elektra felt a hand on her arm, patting as if to comfort. “He will be okay,” Maria said. “You still love him, yes?”
Elektra couldn’t speak the words. She didn’t deserve him.
“You know, meu coração, to bring your heart together with another, it does not make you weaker.” She stroked Elektra’s hair back from her face. “You and Cass are like my own crianças— children. My mother’s heart aches to see you… what does Monty say… oh yes, ‘spinning your wheels’.” She caught Elektra’s hand when she tried to rise. “Tell me Elektra, tell Mama Maria, what do you fear?”
Elektra had not expected Maria to be mother and friend to her, not once condemning her for the way she’d treated Cass a year ago. “Are you afraid of anything, Maria?” She felt her smile wobble.
“Sim, I fear— though infrequently, but I have Rosario to lean on and he has me. Tell me your fears, minha criança,” she said as she turned Elektra’s hand over in her own.
“I hurt Cassidy...” a sob slipped out, but she continued, “I didn’t realize how much. I don’t want to do that again.”
“Ah, you fear only hurting Cassidy?” she asked, her knowing brown eyes lit with compassion.
Elektra was quiet for a moment—another one of those lines in the sand.
